The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) Monday said they would install 30 speed radar guns in the city to detect speed violations. The speed limits in the city are 40 km/hour from 7 am to 10 pm, and 50 km/hr from 10 pm to 7 am.

Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal said overspeeding by motorists is a big challenge. “We could not effectively deploy force physically at all points. The 30 speed radar guns will issue challans automatically if they find speed violations. This is the first time we are introducing these in the city, and we have already installed 10 devices at Rs 54.33 lakh,” he said.

Jiwal also inaugurated a live traffic monitoring system providing real-time information about road conditions. He said the application would help the traffic police stay informed about traffic congestion and accidents.

“This application does simultaneous live monitoring of all 300 proposed junctions covering around 1,000 roads automatically by gathering data from the paid service of Google Maps and analyses information about traffic flow, speed, and incidents,” a release stated.

It added that the system would visually represent traffic conditions through colour-coded maps based on traffic density and obstructions.

“These visualisations highlight areas of congestion, traffic slowdowns, or incidents, enabling the traffic police to quickly assess the current situation. These visualisations can be accessed for particular road stretches along with live situations, wherein the origin and past condition of the traffic can be detected,” the release added.

When traffic congestion is prolonged, a separate notification would be triggered through the application to the concerned officers, it added.

The police said the service might help notify road users about congestion through social media in the future.
