The Delhi Public Works Department has constructed 82 rainwater harvesting pits over the last one year to curb waterlogging during the monsoon as well as to recharge groundwater, said officials.
In a meeting attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and senior PWD officials last June, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena suggested waterlogging pits along the margins of roads to prevent waterlogging. Following the L-G’s directions, the PWD constructed 69 waterlogging pits last year and 13 more this year.
“Last year only, during the monsoon, we constructed the rainwater recharging pits at waterlogging hotspots. The department covered the remaining waterlogging points this year,” said a PWD official.
The officials added, “We were asked to create pits having a diameter of 6-8 inches so water goes into these pits and recharge the groundwater.”
Mathura Road, Batra Cinema, Aurobindo Marg, DDU Marg, Minto Bridge, Chelmsford underpass, MB Road, Outer Ring Road, and Ring Road are some hotspots where these pits have been created.
Meanwhile, the department said it had almost completed the first phase of desilting before the monsoon. “Almost 95 per cent of desilting is completed. Some divisions are yet to submit certificates, but they are expected to submit them this week,” said officials.
