Akshay Kumar, with his 2021 release Sooryavanshi, was credited with bringing the audience back to theatres but that narrative changed when Akshay had a string of flops in 2022 and another big disaster with Selfiee in 2023. Now, in a recent interview, that actor has said that box office flops are an indication as to the audience not connecting with the film, which means that it’s “time for you to change”.
In a chat with Financial Express, Akshay was asked if box office numbers bother him and the actor, without missing a beat, said, “Of course, they do.” He added, “We are made or we are broken because of the box office numbers. That’s what you call hits and flops. The audiences tell us when we are right and where we are going wrong, and all that is reflected in the box office numbers because if a film does not work, that means people didn’t come to see it, which in turn means that they didn’t connect to it. And it means that’s the time for you to change.”
In 2022, Akshay Kumar had a string of flops including Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Cuttputlli and Ram Setu. None of these films did well at the box office, and Cuttputlli, which released directly on OTT, was panned by critics and the audience alike.
Akshay said that he has seen “many cycles of ups and downs in my life”. He said that he he feels bad when something does not work but he is also “proud of the ability I have to move on extremely quickly”. The actor added, “What keeps me going is the same will I had on the first day I started work, I love working! And no one can take that away from me. You just have to keep going on, there is no other way.”
Akshay Kumar will next be seen in OMG 2, which is set to clash with Gadar 2 and Animal at the box office. He also has Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru and the third installment of Hera Pheri in the pipeline.
