The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday alleged that its workers were detained by the Mumbai police to stop them from agitating against the state government by observing “Gaddar Din (Traitor day)” even as Shiv Sena (UBT) said that 15 of their workers were detained.

Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray alleged that “democracy is being killed” in the state everyday. “Our youth wing working president Mehbub Sheikh and other workers were picked up by police and kept in the police station for an entire day to stop them from agitating. In a democratic system, every individual and a political party has a right to protest but the present state government seems hellbent on denying this fundamental right,” said NCP state president Jayant Patil.

NCP national working president Supriya Sule asked whether the state was still a democracy. “We are going to protest today marking this a traitors’ day. Let the police come and arrest us. We are ready for that,” said Sule.

Last year on June 20, present Chief Minister Eknath Shinde along with a few MLAs went to Surat, marking the beginning of rebellion within the Shiv Sena. NCP workers marked this day by protesting on the streets on Tuesday to which the police objected.

A senior police officer of the Mumbai police said that around 15 Sena UBT workers were detained at Azad Maidan and LT Marg police stations as a preventive measure. “They were brought to the police station for sometime after which they were allowed to go. We did this to avoid law and order issues in the city,” the officer said.

Slamming the Eknath Shinde -led government, Aaditya tweeted, “The world is watching as democracy is being killed in Maharashtra everyday. Today the police is being used to detain Shiv Sena office bearers from their homes and offices, only because the leader of the Gaddar (traitor) gang fears that the people will have political protests against his shameless treachery. Is political protest banned in Maharashtra?”.

Sena UBT president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that June 20 should be observed as ‘world traitors day”. Party leader Sanjay Raut also shot off a letter to the United Nations seeking that the day be recognised as “world traitors day”.

Meanwhile, Sena workers led by CM Shinde celebrated at various locations marking the day as “self-respect” day. When asked why Congress did not participate in the protest, Patil said that it was the NCP’s event. “The protest was organised by the NCP. Nobody should draw conclusions on the absence of the Congress,” he said.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole, too, said that his party was not invited to the protest as it was held by the NCP alone. “Whenever there is a joint action, we will surely join it. We were not informed about today’s protest,” he said.

Patole said that the Supreme Court order has proved that the present government is unconstitutional. “We are concerned about the national issues such as violence in Manipur, price rise, corruption of the state and central government. The monsoon is delayed and farmers may face losses. The party will continue to highlight these issues,” said Patole.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded that July 27 — the birthday of Uddhav — be declared “Traitor Day”.

Nitesh Rane, the younger son of Union minister Narayan Rane, tweeted: “Pls declare 27 July as ‘TRAITOR DAY’ . One of the biggest traitor ever seen or experienced was born on this day . He backstabbed his own father who was one of the greatest in the history of Maharashtra as well as India. He backstabbed his own religion n a close friend like the BJP for his own dirty ambitions to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra…”

Sources in the BJP said, “It was Thackeray’s party that attacked first. They demanded June 20 be gaddar din (betrayer day). The BJP believed Shinde along with 40 rebels and 10 independents left because they did not want to associate with the Congress and the NCP. They did not want to compromise on ideology.”
