The Centre has decided to take a tough line to curb violence and extremism in Punjab and the state administration is being strengthened to launch a drive to curb extremism with a strong hand. At least two more Inspector Generals of Police are being appointed to boost the demoralised police administration.

Opposition on Punjab

Charan Singh, said that his party will not attend the opposition meeting called by the Democratic Socialist Party leader HN Bahuguna, to discuss Punjab situation on June 30. This meeting will not serve any purpose and nobody will listen to them, he told newsmen. He said he had told PM Gandhi in October that the USA was behind the Khalistan movement but at that time she kept quiet.

Telugu Desam wins

The Telugu Desam maintained its sway over the electorate in Andhra Pradesh by wresting the Peddapalli Lok Sabha seat from the Congress (I) and retaining the Tadepalligudem assembly seat in the by-elections held recently. The Telugu Desam, defeated Congress (I) in Peddapalli (SC) by securing a lead of 53,045 votes.

India qualified for the semi-final of the Prudential World Cricket Cup, defeating Australia by 118 runs in their final Group ‘B’ match at Chelmsford (England), according to BBC. After scoring 317 in 55.5 overs, India bundled out Australia for 129. Roger Binny and Madan Lal took four wickets each, while Balwinder Sandhu took two. India meet England in the semi-final at Old Trafford to be held on June 22, Roger Binny got the “man of the match” award.
