Four suspected cadres of the proscribed insurgent group United National Liberation Front were apprehended in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Monday. According to Indian Army’s Spearcorps, they were apprehended with a 51 mm mortar and were handed over to the police.
Sources said that following this, hundreds of locals gathered outside the police station demanding their release and they were released on bail on Tuesday.
The UNLF is the oldest Meitei insurgent group.
In the meantime, the Manipur government on Tuesday extended the suspension of internet in the state for another five days till June 25. Internet services in the state have been suspended since violence first broke out on May 3.
As the situation continues to remain too volatile to restore “normalcy,” the government further deferred the re-opening of schools till July 1.
