A 72-year-old woman died after she was allegedly stabbed multiple times with a sharp object on her left shoulder, face, back and chest by two unidentified persons on Tuesday while she was riding a scooter from Mandawali to Preet Vihar in East Delhi, officers said.

Police have lodged a murder case and said prima facie motive behind the incident is suspected to be personal enmity.

DCP (East) Amrutha Guguloth said that police received a call on Tuesday afternoon that a woman had been inflicted knife injuries by two men. On reaching the spot, under the railway bridge at Mandawali, it was revealed that the woman had been admitted to a hospital in Preet Vihar.

In the hospital, the victim, Sudha Gupta, a resident of Nanak Pura in Lakshmi Nagar, was admitted with injuries on the left parietal organ “head and shoulder”. After further examination, the doctor mentioned road traffic accident as alleged history in MLC. The victim was then referred to Max Hospital for treatment. Gupta was further referred to the Metro Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The DCP said that upon examination of the woman’s body, the police staff noticed multiple stab wounds on the left shoulder, on the face, side of the chest, waist and back. “The staff immediately contacted Max Hospital doctors who also opined that there were multiple stab wounds by a sharp object. A case under IPC section murder has been lodged and further probe is being carried out,” said the DCP.

Police said that Gupta lived alone at her residence in Lakshmi Nagar. Her husband died around 2011 and she has five children – three sons and two daughters – who live in different parts of the capital. “The two sons are doctors whereas another son is a property dealer. Her daughters are married…Her family has various properties and she used to look after them,” added the DCP.

A senior officer said: “The prima facie motive behind the incident is suspected to be personal enmity…while the woman was riding her vehicle, it seems that she was intercepted by two men who were also on their bikes. The accused persons, both seemingly in their 20s, used a sharp weapon to stab the elderly woman several times…we have recovered CCTV footage from the area. The number plate of the bike of the accused has been captured in the footage.” Police suspect the involvement of 8-10 persons.
