A couple in Telangana’s Sangareddy district was tied to a tree and caned by a group of villagers who accused them of practising black magic to harm fellow neighbours. The incident took place in a Dalit neighbourhood in Kolkur village on Saturday and a video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The couple in the video was identified as Yadaiah and his wife Shyamamma. According to the police, they received information that a couple was being attacked by a group and immediately rescued them. An FIR has been registered against six people invoking charges of wrongful confinement and attempt to murder and the suspects are being identified. The Sadasivpet police are investigating the case.
“There is no question of black magic. What happened is that this man (Yadaiah) has spread the word that anyone who messes with him will die. Whenever someone who did not have good relations with him died, he used to say it is because of this very reason. People started to believe in this and were vexed over the situation; they tied them up to a tree and thrashed them. The accused and the victims belong to the Scheduled Caste community,” a police officer from Sangareddy district told indianexpress.com.
Over 50 people can be seen in the video but the police said that six to eight people were behind the incident. On Saturday, Yadaiah and his wife Shyamamma were dragged out of their home and brought to the village centre. They were tied to a tree and thrashed, the police said. Though a police team quickly rescued them, the couple sustained minor injuries.
“Though it is a case of wrongful confinement by a group of people, anything could have happened if things had gone out of control. They planned to cause harm to the couple. All the accused will be arrested,” Superintendent of Police (Sangareddy) M Ramanakumar said.
