A 15-YEAR-OLD boy died after he was allegedly beaten up by two brothers — aged 18 and 22 — during a cricket match in a Kanpur village on Tuesday, police said. The accused thought that a throw by the victim towards the wickets was intended to hit him, although the boy was only trying to run out the accused, said an officer.
The accused and his 22-year-old brother allegedly beat up the minor and then strangulated him, leading to his death, police said.
“There was a fight during the game… The whole incident happened on the playground. The 18-year-old was batting and played a cut shot. The boy was fielding at point. He picked up the ball and threw it at a fast pace towards the stumps in a bid to run out the batter. The 18-year-old thought that the fast-paced throw was intended to hit him and got angry. Then, he along with his brother beat up the boy and then held his neck with pressure, which led to the boy’s demise,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Dinesh Kumar Shukla told The Indian Express on Tuesday.
“After the fight, the boy fell on the ground and other youngsters present there informed his family members. They reached the spot and took him to the local community health centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said another police officer.
“A forensics team and police team reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. Three teams have been deployed to trace the accused, who are on the run,” said ACP Shukla.
A case was registered under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) against the two brothers.
