Surat is gearing up for the mega celebration of the ninth edition of International Yoga Day on Wednesday which will be marked in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
More than 1.25 lakh people are expected to perform yoga together along a 12 km stretch.
A virtual address from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in the United States for an official visit, will be the highlight of the event.
Chief Minister Patel will address the people of the state from the event venue at 6.30 am. “On Wednesday morning, yoga will be performed by people in 18,000 villages of 33 districts in Gujarat. Teams of the Guinness Book of World Records have also reached Surat to record the event. The event will start at 7.00 am and culminate at 7.45 am. Over 150 instructors will remain present in each block on stage and perform asanas. Over 20 different asanas will be performed by the enthusiasts,” Gujarat Yoga Board chairman Shishpal Rajput said.
The attendees will be performing yoga along the entire stretch from Vesu to ONGC Circle. At the main event venue, the Chief Minister, Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, BJP MP and Union Minister of State for Railways and Textiles Darshana Jardosh, state BJP chief C R Paatil, apart from other dignitaries, will perform asanas. The event is expected to start at around 6 am, officials said.
Members of business associations and NGOs, students from schools and colleges, MLAs, MPs, police officials, and government officials will be among those who will be present. Attendees will be wearing wristbands with QR codes.
Over 125 blocks — each to accommodate 1,000 yoga performers — have been marked. Each block will have an instructor and LED screens with sound systems, said Rajput.
The event has been jointly organised by Surat Municipal Corporation and the district administration. Special facilities to meet the protocol have been maintained.
Surat Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar said that the stretch from Vesu to ONGC would be closed for traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday till the event ends.
The routine traffic has been diverted to other routes. Service roads on both sides of Vesu to ONGC have been kept open for regular people.
Deputy Commissioner of Surat Municipal Corporation Kamlesh Naik said, “We have provided facilities of medical teams, water and toilet van facilities among others. Along with our staff who are assigned different duties, other SMC officials also were informed to remain present.”
