Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi kickstarted her party’s campaign on Monday (June 12) for the upcoming Assembly election in Madhya Pradesh by conducting an aarti along the banks of the Narmada and addressing a rally at Jabalpur.

In her speech Priyanka accused the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led state BJP government of running a “rishvat raj (bribery raj)”, saying “There is scam after scam in Madhya Pradesh, ration scam, scholarship scam, Vyapam scam, recruitment for police scam, electricity department scam, Covid scam, e-tender scam… It’s such a big list of scams, it’s bigger than (Prime Minister Narendra) Modiji’s list of insults”.

The Congress leader also said that if her party is voted to power, it would deliver on the five promises announced by former Chief Minister Kamal Nath recently. Analysts have noted that the Congress has unveiled these promises following their Karnataka template, which helped them register a thumping victory in the state election last month.

What are the five poll promises by the Congress in Madhya Pradesh?

The five poll promises by the Congress include Rs 1,500 monthly payment for women, provision of gas cylinders for Rs 500, free 100 units of electricity and slashing of electricity bills by half for 200 units, the introduction of the old pension scheme, and loan waivers for farmers.

While announcing these assurances, Priyanka also took a potshot at the BJP and accused it of never fulfilling its promises. She also said that during the Congress rule in Madhya Pradesh, between 2018 and 2022, her party did “a lot of work and development”. She also warned people against falling for the BJP’s “false” promises, dubbing Chief Minister Chouhan a “ghoshna veer (an announcement king)”. “He has made 22,000 announcements in all these years. If he had only given 22,000 jobs, it would have benefited him… Of all his announcements, only 1% have been fulfilled,” she said.

Priyanka also pointed out that the newly formed Congress government in Karnataka is already on its way to implementing all the five schemes that were made during the campaign. On Sunday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the Shakti scheme in which women and transgender persons can travel for free in government buses, other than in luxury and AC classes. The launch came just days after the Karnataka government announced that the Griha Jyoti scheme — free power of up to 200 units to all households — will be launched on August 1 and the Griha Lakshmi scheme — Rs 2,000 for one woman in every household — on August 17-18.

Apart from Shakti, Griha Jyoti and Griha Lakshmi, the other planned schemes in Karnataka are Anna Bhagya, in which 10 kg of food grains will be given to every member of a BPL household and Antyodaya card holders, and Yuva Nidhi, in which unemployed youngsters who graduated in 2022-23 will be provided with an unemployment dole of Rs 3,000, and diploma holders Rs 1,500 — for 24 months from the date of registration.
